چکیده

Liquid crystal (LC) materials possessing the chiral smectic A (Sm A) phase have been designed to yield high induced tilt angles and low response times. The primary objective of our work is to design materials that can provide the optimum tilt angle of 22.5° for applied voltages less than 5V/um, making them CMOS compatible. Optical response measurements to illustrate the feasibility of obtaining 256 gray levels are presented. The gray scale capability of the material is visually demonstrated using a 1X64 array driven by a dc balanced circuit.

Electroclinic effect and modulated phases in smectic liquid crystals.

We explore the possibility that the unusually large electroclinic effect observed in the smectic-A phase of a ferroelectric liquid crystal arises from the presence of an ordered array of disclination lines and walls in a smectic-C* phase. If the spacing of these defects is in the subvisible range, this modulated smectic-C* phase would be similar macroscopically to a smectic-A phase. The applica...

Synchrotron X-ray Microbeam Characterization of Smectic a Liquid Crystals under Electric Field

When an electric field is applied to chiral smectic A (SmA) liquid crystals, a tilt is induced in the director of orthogonal SmA liquid crystals (electroclinic effect). The layer shrinkage due to the tilted smectic arrangement is mitigated by local layer deformation. This paper presents detailed measurements of the local layer spacing under the electroclinic effect of the chiral SmA phase in a ...

Field control of the surface electroclinic effect in chiral smectic-A liquid crystals.

The surface electroclinic effect, which causes an azimuthal deviation of the layer normal from the surface rubbing direction in cells of chiral smectic- A liquid crystals, can be eliminated (and even reversed) by applying an electric field during cooling from the isotropic phase. The observed dependence of layer orientation on field strength leads to a model in which the surface electroclinic t...

Electroclinic effect in a chiral paranematic liquid-crystal layer above the bulk nematic-to-isotropic transition temperature.

Electroclinic measurements are reported for two chiral liquid crystals above their bulk chiral isotropic-nematic phase transition temperatures. It is found that an applied electric field E induces a rotation θ [∝Ε] of the director in the very thin paranematic layers that are induced by the cell's two planar-aligning substrates. The magnitude of the electroclinic coefficient dθ/dE close to the t...

Field-dependent tilt and birefringence of electroclinic liquid crystals: theory and experiment.

An unresolved issue in the theory of liquid crystals is the molecular basis of the electroclinic effect in the smectic-A phase. Recent x-ray scattering experiments suggest that, in a class of siloxane-containing liquid crystals, an electric field changes a state of disordered molecular tilt in random directions into a state of ordered tilt in one direction. To investigate this issue, we measure...
